27. Address to a Deceased Parent at the Processional Ceremony

On in the Won Era, we, your children, and , express a few mourning words before your spirit.
Oh, dear ! Have you indeed left for your journey of passing for good? As if great mountains have fallen to pieces, our minds are stunned and we are at a loss for words to describe the sadness we feel.
, when you gave birth to us and nurtured our feeble bodies, you loved us with all your heart, enduring all troubles; when you guided our imprudent and foolish minds, you devoted yourself to the task, employing all expedient means. Now, as the once powerless bodies of ours have become stronger with self‐power and our imprudent minds have become more prudent, we have become participants in human society. The life that we live today is your gift to us and the fruit of your laborious dedication.
However, lacking in filial piety or owing to some other reasons, we have failed to properly perform our filial duty to serve you and have thereby been unable to always provide you with contentment and comfort. Now, as we unexpectedly face the grief of our final farewell, when looking back at the past, all that remains for us is sorrow and regret.
Dear ! When will we be able to requite your great, immeasurable grace again; when will we resolve the infinitely vast lingering regret again?
Dear ! We earnestly pray that you generously forgive our incapability, abandon even the smallest unexhausted attachment attributable to us by remaining solely in the one pure thought. We supplicate so that you will transcend all delusion and karma by remaining solely in the one pure thought with the Buddha’s Supreme Way as the foundation, attain buddhahood without fail by devoting yourself to great practices. When you are reborn according to your affinity, we supplicate that you become a sage who gives benefit to the world and deliver many people by loving-kindness and compassion. Spirit of ! Watch over us.
