Part 1. General Propriety

Chapter 2. Ordinary Routine

Section 1. About Ordinary Routin

Propriety comes from the inner mind and is expressed outwardly as dignited manner. It begins when we are not at work, and is carried out in our work. It is the foundation of all propriety that we should, first of all, cultivate our minds and discipline our bodies. According to the words of an ancient sage, one phrase that is representative of all propriety is: “never neglecting to maintain a respectful state of mind.” If someone neglects reverence and looks for propriety elsewhere, it is like neglecting the root and instead choosing the branch. Therefore, the proper sequence in learning about propriety is, first of all, to strive to learn the practice of reverence in everyday life.
