Chapter 13. Congratulations and Condolences

Section 1. About Expressing Congratulations and Condolence

Congratulations are given to show happiness and appreciation for someone’s good fortune, or on a festive occasion. Condolences are given to console from one’s heart; to sympathize with someone in misfortune, or on an occasion for mourning. Good fortune and disaster are inevitable in human life, so giving congratulations or consolation is a matter of human obligation in order for people to live in a friendly way with each other in human society. Of course, it is important to utilize proper forms and procedures on these occasions; however, the wholehearted sharing of one's happiness and sorrows with the related person is more important.
