Section 3. Annual Dharma Services

1. The annual dharma services are for all adherents to have a specialized training in doctrine and practice. Generally, summer retreats shall be held for three months during summer, and winter retreats for three months during winter. In case it is impossible to have a retreat for three months, according to circumstances, a short-term retreat or meeting for lecturing can be substituted according to the regulations.
2. The opening ceremony of the Sŏn-retreat shall be conducted in the following order:
1) Opening
2) Entering Samadhi
3) Song of the Order (Hymn 2)
4) Mental affirmation (Ceremonial Text 43)
5) Reciting the dharma words with reverence
6) The Essential Dharmas of Daily Practice (Ceremonial Text 9)
7) Report about the retreat’s attendee
8) Admonitory speech
9) Instruction of the officiator
10) Explanation about discipline in the Sŏn-retreat
11) Song of Opening the Sŏn-Retreat (Hymn 32)
12) Closing.
3. The closing ceremony of the Sŏn-retreat shall be conducted in the following order:
1) Opening
2) Entering Samadhi
3) Song of the Order (Hymn 2)
4) Mental affirmation (Ceremonial Text 44)
5) Reading the dharma words with reverence
6) The Essential Dharmas of Daily Practice (Ceremonial Text 9)
7) Calling the retreat attendees' names
8) Admonitory speech
9) Instruction of officiator
10) Report of achievements and awarding a certificate of merit
11) Individual report and presentation on the self-examination of status
12) Congratulatory and valedictory speeches
13) Song of Closing of Sŏn-Retreat (Hymn 33)
14) Closing.
4. In the opening ceremony, disciplines of the Sŏn-retreat shall be versed on the Regulations of the Order; in the closing ceremony, report of achievements and awarding of certificate of merit, individual report and presentation of the self- examination of status may be omitted as needed.
5. The opening ceremony or the graduation ceremony of the permanent center for Sŏn-retreats shall be conducted with additions or omissions appropriately based on the procedures set forth for the opening or closing ceremony of a Sŏn-retreat.
