Chapter 4. Attaining Deliverance

Section 1. About Attaining Deliverance

Attaining deliverance (Tŭkdo) refers to the believer’s receiving of Buddha’s teaching and guidance when taking refuge in the dharma gate after having lived an ordinary life in the secular world. There are two kinds of Initiation: Entry into the Order and Entry into the Priesthood. Entry into the Order is becoming a Won-Buddhist believer by entering the Buddhist gate for the first time. Entry into the Priesthood is going one step further and taking an oath to become an ordained devotee (Chŏnmu Ch'ulsin). The Ceremony of Initiation into the Way is a rite intended to strengthen the believer’s aspiration and vow, and to encourage that person to carry them out.
