Sūtra in Forty-Two Sections

Section 3

The Buddha said: “He who cuts off his hair and beard is a śramaṇa; he is one who accepts the dharma of the Way and leaves behind worldly wealth and riches. He goes on alms-round [for his daily sustenance] and is satisfied with what he receives. He eats but one meal a day, passes the night under a tree, and is careful not to repeat either. What makes people foolish and dim are craving and desire.”
