The Scripture of the Founding Master
Chapter Twelve: Exemplary Acts
33
When Yi Tongan entered nirvāṇa, the Founding Master, after a moment of silent reflection, shed tears. The disciples said, “Please don’t let your mind be so aggrieved.” The Founding Master said, “Though my mind may not be hurting, I cannot help but shed tears as I part from him. From the very beginning of our dispensation, he completely supported my aim and firmly grasped the rope of faith. Afterwards, no matter what official task he was carrying out, he was utterly unconcerned about status or position.”
