62. The Master commented on the five relationships: “The five relationships, the moral paradigm for East Asian ethics, was the foundation of all the norms pertaining to family, society, and state. However, in recent years, there has been lax observance of this teaching and its practical efficacy has declined. Thus, it needs to be revised to fit the present age. The old description was as follows: ‘Between father and son, there should be affection; between lord and vassal, there should be righteousness; between husband and wife, there should be a separation of roles; between old and young, there should be proper order; and between friends, there should be trustworthinesss.’ This description should be revised as follows: ‘Between parents and children, there should be affection; between senior and junior, there should be fidelity; between husband and wife, there should be harmony; between adults and children, there should be proper order; and between fellow beings, there should be trustworthiness.’ This redefinition will revive the original spirit of this teaching and lead to consummate realization of the ancient sages’ intent.”
