54. A student asked, “In accordance with the law of the twelve links of dependent origination (pratītyasamutpāda), is the Buddha also reborn due to ignorance (avidyā)?” The Master replied, “The Buddha is reborn freely of his own accord.” The student asked again, “Wasn’t the Buddha also benighted before he attained enlightenment?” The Master replied, “During the process of his rebirth, he might briefly have been benighted, but he quickly became enlightened to his original nature. With anyone, what one has cultivated in one’s past lives is realized quickly; hence, it is easy to master up to the level of one’s past cultivation.”

A student asked, “In accordance with the law of the twelve links of dependent origination (ita_tpratītyasamutpādaitb_t), is the Buddha also reborn due to ignorance (ita_tavidyāitb_t)?” The Master replied, “The Buddha is reborn freely of his own accord.” The student asked again, “Wasn’t the Buddha also benighted before he attained enlightenment?” The Master replied, “During the process of his rebirth, he might briefly have been benighted, but he quickly became enlightened to his original nature. With anyone, what one has cultivated in one’s past lives is realized quickly; hence, it is easy to master up to the level of one’s past cultivation.”
