Chapter One: His Affinities with the Founding Master

4. The following month, the Founding Master sent Chŏngsan off to Wŏlmyŏng Hermitage in Pyŏnsan, Puan County, and said to him, “Don’t read Buddhist scriptures.” Then, Chŏngsan turned his eyes away even from the sight of the scripture stand. Another time, the Founding Master sent him off to Mandŏk Mountain in Chinan County and said, “Don’t stop by Chŏnju.” Chŏngsan then went away and would not even look in the direction of Chŏnju. Later, Cardinal Master Chŏngsan said to his students, “I have never offered a single material thing to the Founding Master, but I have not the slightest regret as far as the affection and loyalty I have displayed. In my mind, I never departed from him; in my actions, I never disobeyed his will even once.”
