46. The Master said, “Everybody is curious about what happened to them in their past lives and what will happen to them in their future lives, but although these matters may seem inscrutable, they are actually easy to fathom. The Buddha had a truly astute saying: ‘If you want to know what happened to you in your past lives, it is what you are receiving in this present life. If you want to know what will happen in your future life, it is what you are accumulating in the present life.’ If you previously made wholesome accumulations, you will receive wholesome effects in the present life; and if you are receiving unwholesome effects, then you made unwholesome accumulations in past lives. Those who understand this principle will make every effort to accumulate more wholesome karma, but those who do not will only lament.”
