54. A student asked, “It is said that the pure land is in the west. What does this mean?” The Master replied, “The west belongs to metal among the five primary elements, and metal is supposed to represent autumnal energy. Because the autumn is clear and cool, mental energy that is clear and calm is symbolized by the west. Therefore, if our spirit is unimpaired so that it remains clear and calm, anywhere in the worlds of the ten directions will be the pure land.”
